What is trigonometry?

Trigonometry is the study of triangles. It is used to find the lengths of sides and angles of triangles, as well as to solve problems involving triangles. Trigonometry is based on the Pythagorean theorem, which states that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

The six trigonometric functions

There are six trigonometric functions: sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant. These functions are used to find the lengths of sides and angles of triangles.

  • The sine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the hypotenuse.
  • The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the hypotenuse.
  • The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side.
  • The cotangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the opposite side.
  • The secant of an angle is the ratio of the length of the hypotenuse to the length of the adjacent side.
  • The cosecant of an angle is the ratio of the length of the hypotenuse to the length of the opposite side.

Using trigonometry

Trigonometry is used to solve a wide variety of problems. Here are a few examples:

  • Find the height of a tree by measuring the angle of elevation from a known distance.
  • Find the distance across a river by measuring the angle of depression from one bank to the other.
  • Solve a right triangle by finding the lengths of the missing sides and angles.

Tips for learning trigonometry

Here are a few tips for learning trigonometry:

  • Start by learning the basics of algebra and geometry.
  • Use a calculator to help you with the calculations.
  • Practice solving problems until you are comfortable with the material.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help from a teacher or tutor.

Trigonometry is a valuable tool that can be used to solve a wide variety of problems. By following the tips in this guide, you can learn the basics of trigonometry and start using it to solve problems in your own life.
