Early Life and Career

Nicklas Lidstrom was born on April 28, 1970, in Vasteras, Sweden. He began playing hockey at a young age, and quickly developed into a talented defenseman. Lidstrom was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1991-92 season, and quickly became a regular on the Red Wings' blue line.

Lidstrom's early years in the NHL were marked by steady improvement. He was named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team in 1991-92, and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. In 1993-94, Lidstrom won his first Stanley Cup with the Red Wings. He would go on to win six more Stanley Cups with Detroit, in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008, and 2009.

Lidstrom was known for his exceptional skating, puck-handling, and defensive skills. He was a master of the neutral zone, and was able to control the puck and make plays with ease. Lidstrom was also a very good shooter, and scored 264 goals during his NHL career.

Lidstrom was also a leader on and off the ice. He was named captain of the Red Wings in 2006, and held that position until his retirement in 2012.
