The possessive case of nouns is a grammatical construction used to indicate ownership or possession. It is typically formed by adding an apostrophe ('s) to the end of a singular noun or an apostrophe (') to the end of a plural noun that ends in -s. For example, the possessive form of "dog" is "dog's" and the possessive form of "cats" is "cats'".

There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, the possessive form of proper nouns that end in -s is formed by adding an apostrophe only. For example, the possessive form of "Charles" is "Charles'" and the possessive form of "Jones" is "Jones'".

Types of Possessive Case

There are two main types of possessive case:

  • Singular possessive case: This is used to indicate ownership or possession of a singular noun. It is formed by adding an apostrophe ('s) to the end of the noun. For example, "the dog's bone" indicates that the bone belongs to the dog.
  • Plural possessive case: This is used to indicate ownership or possession of a plural noun. It is formed by adding an apostrophe (') to the end of the noun. For example, "the cats' toys" indicates that the toys belong to the cats.

Rules for Forming the Possessive Case

There are some general rules for forming the possessive case of nouns:

  • For singular nouns, add an apostrophe ('s) to the end of the noun. For example, "the dog's bone."
  • For plural nouns that end in -s, add an apostrophe (') to the end of the noun. For example, "the cats' toys."
  • For proper nouns that end in -s, just add an apostrophe ('). For example, "Charles's book."
  • For compound nouns, add the apostrophe ('s) to the last word in the compound. For example, "the mayor-elect's office."
